Configuring Reliance Netconnect(ZTE AC2738) with TP-Link TL-MR3020 3G Wireless Router

This post is about how to configure a Reliance Netconnect (USB 3G/4G dongle) with a TP-Link TL-MR3020 Wireless 3G router.

Prelude:  TP-Link MR3030 3G/4G wireless router is a small portable device which helps in sharing an internet connection from 3g/4G USB sticks/connections like Reliance Netconnect/Tata Photon/BSNL EVDO/Airtel etc over a Wifi network.

Some of the highlights of this produce are

  • Very small and lightweight and aesthetics are pretty good (Have the looks of a apple product 🙂 )
  • Powered via a mini USB port and the charger cable is a mini USB to regular USB which means you can power it by simply connecting it a laptop. Also if you have a car mobile charger you can power it up in the car and make your car a mobile wifi hotspot
  • Have a RJ45 Ethernet port which can act as a wan port as well as a lan port depending on the mode of operation
  • Supports 3 modes of operation
3G/4G only mode: Primary internet connection is from the 3G/4G dongle connected to the USB port of the router and the RJ45 port will act as a LAN port.
WAN/3G/4G mode: Primary internet connection is from the WAN and if its not working then it will fall back to the 3g/4g usb dongle. Note in this mode the RJ45 port will act like a WAN port.
Note: This can be used in home as a always connected internet redundancy option
WAN only mode: Primary internet connection is from the WAN port and 3g/4G is not used In this mode the RJ45 port works as a WAN port.

Out of the box, this router doesn’t support Reliance Netconnect (ZTE AC2738). The router will keep on identifying the device and then say conencting to it and then will get disconnected.   Following are the steps which I followed to make it work. Thought of sharing it as it may help others.

  1. Firmware Upgrade: The default firmware which came with the device needs to be upgraded to the latest one for this to work.(
Default Firmware which I got was: 3.14.2 Build 120817 Rel.55520n
    Upgraded firmware version : 3.15.2 Build 130326 Rel.58517
Date of release of the new firmware: 18th April 2013
Firmware Download Link:  http://www.tp-link.us/support/download/?model=TL-MR3020&version=V1 (if the site is down you get the same from here.
    Firmware file name: TL-MR3020_V1_130326
Installing the firmware: Unzip/extract the downloaded firmware to a folder. Now go to the the TR3929 websetup click on SystemTools->Firmwareupgrade->and point to the extracted firmware image location.  Upgrade will take about 1 minute, wait for it to be complete and then proceed to step 2.
  2. Configuring the 3G router: Now in the TR3020 websetup, click on Quicksetup, select 3G/4G router only mode ->Next->Select Country as India->Select the Service provider as “Reliance Netconnect” (there are multiple reliance profiles, so select the one with Dial number as #777 and APN is blank (read blank as nothing)”, Select manual option of entering username and password and put username as “net” and password as “net”->Next->Click next until you get finish

Thats it you are done, Now you should be able to connect to the internet.

Also make sure you left the APN blank.

      1. Hi Sir,

  5. Hi

I have Reliance broadband+ (AC 2736) without SIM (CDMA).
A retailer told me that MR3020 will not work with dongle without SIM is that correct?

Shall i buy product or not? can someone suggest on this ?
Does anyone using same dongle with MR3020?

    Sridhar

    1. Hi Sridhar,
you can check with the tp-link forums/support team regarding this and they may be able to help you.

    2. Hi Sridhar,
Better buy iBall router. My MR3020 is not working with any dongle

  6. Hi i bought this router yesterday [ie tp link 3020] and i have been trying to configure it to run this reliance netconnet+ [ZTE AC2738] but everytime i connect it to the router it keeps on identifiying for a while on the status page and when it does get identified the antenna as shown in there is 0% [while i use the datacard in my laptop directly its running fine] and well as for the firmware yes i have upgraded it to the latest once and for the setting i did put in #777 for dial no.
“net” for username and pass but still it does’nt seem to be working any guesses what might be the problem?

    1. Hi Siddharth,
Can you please check whether you have exactly followed the steps as mentioned in my blog. (You have to put the APN field blank.

      1. hmm well i contacted the tp link technical support and they sent me a beta bin file i tried that and well to my surprise it worked and the biggest surprise was that it was the oldest version of the firmware i.e 3.12.11 Build 120320 Rel.42138n but well its working now so all’s good

      2. I got the build 120320 by modifying the date in JerinJospeh’s link the post (last few digits of the URL). My netconnect is now woring with TP Link. Thanks guys.

URL for firmware needed for my (and maybe some others’ netconnect dongle) : http://www.tp-link.us/resources/software/TL-MR3020_V1_120320.zip

    2. Hi Siddhart, even i’m facing same problem…. cud u plz share me tht bin file

    3. Hey
      Siddharth
Please send me that beta bin file if possible for you.
      Thanks

    1. Hi I tried to connect after following all the steps one by one for reliance netconnet+ [ZTE AC2738] but no luck. Can any one help me

      1. Hi Sree,
Please email the tp-link support team to see whether your 3g modem is supported.

  8. There are enough reviews about this product, so I am writing a solution that many people wants, most of them are frustrated because they couldn’t make it work.
Let me explain how to make Reliance ZTE ModelNo: AC2738 dongle work with this router.

Step 1: Upgrade your Firmware to the latest, available in TP Link website which is (https://www.dropbox.com/s/p8qfhijeo7selyu/TL-MR3020_V1_130326.zip)
Step 2: After update, go to “Quick Setup”
Step 3: Internet Access 3G/4G only or 3G/4G Preferred
Step 4: Select Location as “India” and Mobile ISP as “Reliance Netconnect” (#777 and APN “”)
    Step 5: Authentication Type “Auto”
Step 6: Select the Check box “Set the Dial Number, APN, Username and Password manually”
Step 7: Dial Number should be #777
Step 8: Enter User and Password as “net” (Either use Reliacne Netconnect+ Application setting and that details)
Step 9: Click Next and complete wireless setup

Bingo!!! You are connected to Internet using Reliance ZTE ModelNo. AC2738 dongle!

If this resolved your issue, give me a like 🙂

    1. followed ur steps bro but not connected …do have any idea what da mistake i did??

      Do you know why?

    3. It is not working for all users even for me.

      1. One thing with TP link support is really awesome. They respond very fast. I got my problems solved by upgrading to older firmware version 120320. Strange that new version is not compatible.

  9. Sorry wireframe

  10. if the modal is TL-MR3420

  11. I tried everything but it is still not working. Contacted customer care and updated the firmware to the version they provided in mail. Better to buy some other router like i-ball which has a better customer care. My friend bought i-ball and it is working with reliance netconnect (after calling customer care)

  12. can we ckeck the mode of reliance netconnect b/w hybrid or netconnect+…in TP 3020..

  13. Hello Mr. Jerin Joseph,
I have reliance Netconnet+ (ZTE-AC2738) and TP-Link wireless N Router (TL-MR3020). The IP address 192.168.0.1 being provided in your blog doesnt open in any of the browser (IE,Mozilla and Chrome). Do I need to connect the Internet while opening that address or continue without it ?
    Please Help Me on this.

    1. Hi Deepak,
192.168.0.1 is the default management ip assigned to the tp-link router when its booted up. There is no need to connect to the internet for accessing the same. The following things you can check.
      1. Make sure laptop has connected to the Wireless network of the Tp-link router and not to any other network.
      2. Once step 1 is complete, check whether your laptop has got the dynamic ip from the wireless router (To check this, start-menu->All programs->Accessories->command prompt, Alternatively you can type cmd.exe in the run dialog box)
      3. Now issue the below command in the command prompt window which you opened in step 2
      “ipconfig”
this will give you a little big output and scroll above to check whats the ip your wireless adapter has got. if it has got an ip in the below range (192.168.0.x, where x is between 2 and 254), that means you are connected to the Tp-link router.
      4. Now try pinging to the ip 192.168.0.1 from the same command prompt window by issuing the command “ping 192.168.0.1”. if the ping succeeds then that means there is no connectivity issue.
      4. if step 4 is successful, then you should be able to open the router configuration utility from any browser.

  14. Unable to open 192.168.0.1 in chrome or IE. I have connected to wireless network of tp link mr3020. Please help,Mr Joseph?

    1. Hi Piyush,
Please refer to my comment reply for Deepak’s question.

      1. Does reliance netconnect really works on tp link mr3020 becoz in going to buy it otherwise my money will go waste reply fast

While I was stuck with identical issue ( I have a TL-MR3020 router with Reliance Netconnect ZTE 2738 HSD modem) and all possible & suggested configurations including upgrading Firmware (Now they have made the April 2014 release) failed the downgrade option you have mentioned DID work for me.

Just repeating the old download page for reference to all other people who might have been stuck in similar situation.

Initially I was using reliance ZTE AC2737 and then I bought TL-MR3020 and configured it as per ZTE AC2737. It worked perfectly.

Then after a long search i found your .bin file. I upgraded with it and voila it worked

    1. Hi Deepak,
Just buy a 3g/4g wireless router like TP link MR3020 and you are all set to go with sharing your 3g connection over wifi.

  48. fabulous! a novice like me could understand and activate the MR3020 and Rel Net connect AC 2737 ! I bought the TL-MR3020 about 3 days back. Thank u so much and wish u the best!!!

  49. Hi Jerin! Good afternoon!
out of excitement I didn’t wish u in my previous post. I’m sorry for that .

  50. Thanks for all the help…

    I am using Reliance Netconnect+

I was able to download firmware 120320 3.12.11 from site
    http://wiki.dbg.co.za/index.php?title=3G/4G_router_firmware_downloads

    It worked like a charm!

  51. There are lot of firmwares released for this product but some models(of same type MR3020) support different firmwares.
So basically you will have to experiment with each firmware. I bought this device few months after it was released and for me “mr3020nv1_en_3_12_11_up(120320).bin” this version worked perfectly. But when I upgrade it to latest version available on TP Link site, it doesn’t work. So, try all the version starting from the old version 12.
If you have bought this product around August 2013 then the above mentioned firmware may work for you.
All the steps mentioned by Jerin Joseph are same.

  52. Great help mate. Cheers

  53. Guys, some one help me understand the functionality of MR3020 correctly. A laptop or PC connectivity is required only for setting up the router. After successful setup and establishing connectivity with internet, for subsequent requirements, is it sufficient to power up the router through the adapter and insert the 3G Modem to start the Wi-fi hotspot ?

    1. Hi Sreesha,
you are right. Once setup, powering up the router with 3g stick connected is all you need to do.

    2. Yes. You need to power up the device using the adapter or using the USB cable and computer.

  54. Hi Jerin / Praveen,
    Thanks for the prompt replies.
My issue is I am able to set up the router properly and access the internet through my laptop on windows 7. However, once I shutdown the laptop and power the router through the adopter with the MTS inserted, it is not connecting to internet. I have repeated this many time with the same result. Support guys from TP-Link keep repeating about the firmware upgrade and setup thing only.
    Any help on this ??

    1. Hi Sreesha,
Sorry I didnt understand your problem clearly. Can you clarify the below queries, sorry if these sounds stupid as I didn’t get your problem?

When you say you configured the router and you are able to access internet from your laptop
      1. how is the router powered, is it powered via the usb port on laptop or connected to the power adaptor?
      2. Was the MTS 3g card inserted on the router or was it connected to your laptop?

      1. Hi Jerin,
        Let me more specific.
While configuring I powered the router from USB of laptop and the LAN cable also was connected. MTS was inserted in to the USB port of the router. I completed the setup of router and modem, checked and found the status page displaying -‘identified’ as well as ‘connected’. I scrolled through each configuration page such INTERNET, 3G, Wireless and saved also.I could connect to the internet and download also. I could see the No. of bytes sent & received go up gradually.
After this I have shutdown the laptop. I connected the power to the router from the adapter and the MTS inserted in the USB port. The router is not turning on the internet. Although I am able to connect to the router from my smart phone or tab, internet is not available. The LED next to the power LED in the router remains in OFF condition.

      2. Thanks Sreesha for explaining in detail. Following can be the issue
        1. Make sure your 3G data card gets enough signal strength from the tower where your adaptor is placed. Try changing it to a power adaptor which is closer to the window or connect the MTS datacard directly to the laptop and using the supplied software see at which corner of the room you get the best range and try to place the TPlink router near that area,
        2. This option is less likely to happen as you are able to connect to to wifi.
Power adaptor of the router is gone bad or some issue with it causing it to not give out enough power to turn on the 3G data card. you can try changing the power adaptor with another one and try. Also I assume you got a Y shaped USB cable along with the router. Try connecting it to the other USB cable in Y.
let me know how it goes.

  57. Hi everybody, here every one is sharing these knowledge, so it’s pleasant
to read this blog, and I used to pay a quick visit
    this website everyday.

  58. Hi Everybody, Thanks all for your help. I am in Bangalore. I have q question. Whether
TL-MR3040 work with reliance netconenct+ ZTE Ac2738 which is 2G datacard? Whether 2G datacard works?

    1. Hi Kumar,

Yes it works with this model. I am using it. You will have to patch new firmware which supports reliance dongle. Most of the versions of Firmwares are mentioned in the comments above. Though it will work but it will not be smooth, it will go down sometimes(it happens with my device which I bought a year back, don’t know about new mfg. models) and then you will have to reboot it.

      Thanks!

      1. Hi Praveen,
Thanks for your reply. I will try..

      2. Hi Praveen,
I tried with latest firmware. It showing Identified but not connecting. MY TL-MR3040 is version 2.1 When contacted TP-Link support they told that reliance netconnect+ ZTE AC 2738 will only work for TL-MR3040 version 1 Please inform whether you have used version 2 of TL-MR3040 or version 1?

If you are using version 2 of TL-MR3040 with reliance ZTE AC2738 , please inform which firmware version you are using.

        Thanks,
        kumar

    2. Hi,

ZTE AC2738 is not compatible with TL-MR3040 according to the TP-Link.
The model is not shown in the compatible list and there is no patch available for that.

  59. Thanks and 2 worked for me.

    1. I have a reliance Pro 3 datacard (ZTE AC 2791) and am looking for a wifi router to use it on. Spoke to Reliance customer care who told me that this connection works on a CDMA platform and therefore cannot be configured for wifi access. Is this true?? Can someone suggest a wifi router for this device?I know nothing of networking devices – pls somebody shed light and suggest a good model! I am using Win 8.1 on my laptop. Pls help.

      1. Hi Kartik, you have just encountered a typical customer service executive who specializes in delivering misinformation to customers. Good news is, the Pro 3 dongle works perfectly well with this TP-Link router! Refer to my previous comment (in reply to Kailash). Can you let me know how the Reliance 14Mbps coverage is in your area? Are you from Hyderabad?

    2. Hey Kailash,

I was searching around to find an answer to the same question, and there’s good news for you. The ZTE AC2791 (Reliance Pro3) is fully compatible with the TP-Link TL-MR2030 router. There is an Amazon review by someone who actually used it and testified the same at http://www.amazon.in/review/R3JFPVSSO7XO91 . Best of luck with your purchase.

Indeed a neat device priced at around 1200 rupees ($20), I’m going ahead and buying one for home.

You can contact me on Quora (click the link on my name above) if you have any questions!

    3. HI Kailash,

Did you purchased Pro 3 and able to use TpLink 3020? I am planning to buy Pro 3 though and I have TP Link 3020. Let me if they are compatible.

  125. Is this device work with Jio Wifi (JioFi) ?. In our office cable DSL connection is disconnected frequently during rainy season. So I decided to buy this device and connect it to our LAN with a JioFi or MTS Blaze.

is it possible..? tnx in adv 🙂

    1. Sorry I didn’t get your question clearly. Jiofi already has wifi, so I dont understand why you need to connect to this device. If you are planning to connect jio sim on to a dongle and connect, I am not sure whether it will work as its a 3G device where as Jio is a 4g sim.
